Description

Gai Lan is a Chinese broccoli grown for its delicious tender stalks.   Stalks are generally harvested before in the bud stage before flowers begin to open.  We much prefer growing this over the standard heading broccoli in our climate and it is quickly becoming a staple of our farm.  Not only does it have the tastiest broccoli flavor but can harvest from the same plants for the majority of the season don’t have to worry about sunscald that can be common from the intense sun we get in high up in the mountains.   

This is the fifth year of a Gai Lan project that Adam has been working on.  This variety of Gai Lan was started from a hybrid swarm created from over a dozen open pollinated and hybrid gai-lan varieties.  Population has been selected for direct sown plants that can survive early cold temperatures without bolting and provide consistent thick side-shoots.  Plants do well both direct sown and transplanted and can produce side shoots for the bulk of our season with consistent harvesting.  The populations still exhibits a bit of diversity but has enough consistency to make it something that valuable for the market grower.  A must grow! says Adam :)
